Figma can now strip the background out of any image right inside your design file, no round-trip to a photo editor required. Here's the catch most people miss about what it actually does.

Figma's Background Removal is an AI feature that isolates the subject of an image and knocks out everything behind it, turning the background transparent — all without leaving your design file. It launched in December 2025 and works across Figma Design, Figma Slides, Figma Sites, FigJam, Figma Buzz, and Figma Draw.
Traditionally, designers would export a raw image, open it in Photoshop or a dedicated background remover, mask the subject, and re-import the clean version — losing their prototype context and layer structure along the way. Figma now handles the removal live on the canvas, preserving the original resolution and keeping your layers editable so you can keep iterating.
One important clarification: the feature only removes backgrounds down to transparency. It does not automatically generate or swap in a new background for you. If you want a new backdrop, you place it manually behind the cut-out subject inside Figma — but the tedious masking step is done for you by the AI.

02. Step-by-Step Guide

Confirm you're on a paid plan with edit access
Background Removal requires a paid plan (Professional, Organization, or Enterprise with a Full seat) and you must have 'can edit file' permission on the file. It also uses shared Figma AI credits, so make sure you have credits available.

Select the image on your canvas
In Figma Design, Slides, or Sites, click the image layer you want to clean up. In FigJam, select the image to bring up its inline toolbar.

Open the background removal control
In Figma Design, Slides, and Sites, click the 'Remove background' button in the secondary toolbar that appears for the selected image. In FigJam, open the inline toolbar, go to 'AI tools,' then choose 'Remove background.'

Let the AI process the image
Figma isolates the subject and turns the background transparent. Your original resolution is preserved and the result stays an editable layer on the canvas.

Add your own new background (optional)
Since the feature only removes — it does not replace — drop a shape, color, gradient, or another image layer behind the cut-out subject if you want a fresh backdrop.
