01. What It Is
For a long time Claude could only read your Microsoft 365 data—it could search email, peek at calendars, and pull information from files. That changed with two recent additions: the Microsoft 365 Connector gained 'write tools' on July 7, 2026, and the Claude for Microsoft 365 Office add-ins for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook launched on May 7, 2026.
With write tools enabled, Claude can create and update files in OneDrive and SharePoint, draft and send emails through Outlook, and manage calendar events—all inside the conversation. The Office add-ins take a different approach: they live inside an app you're actively driving, so you can ask Claude to build a spreadsheet, write a document, or shape a presentation without switching tools.
The catch is that almost nobody knows it exists. Write tools are off by default and must be switched on by a workspace admin, so most users keep drafting manually and copy-pasting between windows, unaware Claude could do the writing directly.
Why It Matters
This collapses the loop between 'ask the AI' and 'do the work.' Instead of asking Claude to draft an email and then pasting it into Outlook, or generating a table and rebuilding it in Excel, Claude writes to the real file or sends the real message. 02. Step-by-Step Guide

Confirm you have a work Microsoft 365 account
Write tools require a work account tied to a Microsoft Entra tenant. Personal accounts like @outlook.com or @hotmail.com will not work with the connector.

Connect the Microsoft 365 Connector in Claude
In Claude's settings, add the Microsoft 365 Connector and sign in with your work account. The connector is available on every plan—Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise.

Ask your admin to enable write tools
Write tools are off by default. A workspace admin must turn them on before Claude can create files, send emails, or manage calendar events. Until then, the connector stays read-only.

Make sure your files live in the cloud
Claude can only touch files stored in SharePoint or OneDrive, not documents saved locally. Recently uploaded files may take 5–15 minutes to become searchable through the Graph API.

Direct Claude explicitly to write
Tell Claude exactly what to do—'draft and send an email to the team about the launch date' or 'update the Q3 budget file in OneDrive.' Claude acts only when you instruct it; there are no automatic, event-triggered actions.

For Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (generally available on paid plans) and Outlook (public beta), install the Claude add-in and drive it from inside the open app. The Outlook add-in drafts emails but won't send without your confirmation.

- Claude uses delegated permissions—it can only access and modify data you already have permission to view, so it never exceeds your own access.
- Emails sent through write tools carry an agent-initiated attribution header, so recipients can see it was AI-assisted; file and calendar writes are not tagged this way.
- If a just-uploaded file isn't showing up, wait 5–15 minutes for Graph API indexing before assuming something's broken.
- Combine the connector with the Office add-ins: use the connector for cross-app actions and the add-ins for deep, in-app document building.
Warnings & Limitations
- Personal Microsoft accounts (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com) are not supported—work accounts only.
- Write tools are disabled until an admin enables them, so you may need to request access.
- Attachments are not supported in write tools, Teams remains read-only, and there are no event-triggered automations—Claude acts only when explicitly directed.
- Per-user rate limits apply to writes, sends, and recipients, which can cap high-volume tasks.
- The Outlook add-in is still in public beta and drafts rather than sends without your confirmation.
