Most Google Sheets Users Don't Know It Can Now Build Apps From a Sentence
Gemini can turn a plain spreadsheet into a live, read-write interactive app—just describe what you want in plain English. No formulas, no code.
01. What It Is
Google Sheets Canvas is a new Gemini-powered layer that sits on top of your spreadsheet data and turns it into a custom interactive interface. Instead of scrolling through rows and columns, you get an app-like view—forms, cards, buttons, and layouts—generated entirely from a natural-language description you type into the Ask Gemini side panel.
The key word is read-write. Canvas isn't just a prettier way to look at data; if you have edit access to the sheet, you can add, change, or delete records directly from the canvas, and those changes flow straight back into the underlying tab. It stays synced in real time in both directions—edit the sheet and the canvas updates, edit the canvas and the sheet updates.
Because it's built on top of your existing tab, nothing gets replaced or destroyed. Your raw data stays exactly where it is, and the canvas is simply a workflow-friendly window into it. You can even share a canvas the same way you'd share any Sheets tab.
Why It Matters
Building a lightweight internal tool—an intake form, a task tracker, a simple CRM view—used to mean Apps Script, add-ons, or a separate no-code platform. Canvas collapses that into one sentence, letting non-technical teammates spin up usable interfaces in seconds and keep everyone working off a single source of truth without touching a formula.
Who Can Benefit
- Small teams that live in spreadsheets but want cleaner, app-like data entry
- Managers who need shareable dashboards or trackers without hiring a developer
- Non-technical users intimidated by formulas or Apps Script
- Operations and admin staff building quick intake or request workflows
02. Step-by-Step Guide
- 1
Confirm you're eligible
You need an eligible plan: Google AI Pro or Ultra, Workspace Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, or the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Your admin must have enabled Gemini in Sheets, and you must have Workspace smart features turned on in your account settings.
- 2
Open your sheet on the web
Canvas is currently web-only, and your file must be stored in Google Drive—not third-party storage or an offline document. Open the Sheet tab that holds the data you want to work with.
- 3
Launch the Gemini side panel
Click the Gemini icon to open the Ask Gemini side panel in Google Sheets.
- 4
Select 'Create canvas'
In the panel, choose the 'Create canvas' option to start building an interface on top of your current tab's data.
- 5
Describe what you want in plain English
Type your request in natural language—for example, describe the layout, fields, and actions you'd like. Gemini generates the interactive canvas from that description. No code or formulas required.
- 6
Use, edit, and share it
If you have edit access, add, change, or delete data right in the canvas—it syncs to the sheet instantly. Share the canvas like any other Sheets tab when you're ready.
Create a canvas from this tab: a task tracker where each row is shown as a card with the task name, owner, due date, and status. Add a way to mark tasks complete and a button to add a new task. Group the cards by status.
Pro Tips
- Keep each canvas focused on one Sheet tab—Canvas works with data from a single tab only.
- Trim very large datasets when possible; sheets with 100K+ rows may slow performance.
- Because edits sync both ways in real time, it's a great shared front-end for a team working off one master sheet.
- Iterate by refining your prompt—describe the exact fields, groupings, and actions you want rather than settling for the first layout.
Warnings & Limitations
- The feature is English-only at this time.
- It's web-only—no mobile support has been announced.
- You can't edit the canvas if you have view-only or comment-only access to the sheet.
- Usage is subject to undisclosed per-user monthly limits.
- Rollout began August 10, 2026 (Rapid Release) and August 31, 2026 (Scheduled Release), so availability may vary by domain.
